Where did June go?
It is time for an update from New City Classical Academy! We are certain that you can relate to us when we ask “Where did June go?” It feels like the 2022-2023 school year came to a close last week, and yet, we are marching directly into July. As we approach the start of the school year, we are grateful to introduce you to two of our grammar school teachers! We praise God for bringing them to NCCA and give Him the glory. Read their short bios after a glimpse of our experience at the Repairing the Ruins conference and other updates.
What’s Happening This Week at NCCA:
Our leadership team, alongside Andy & Karlie Van Soelen, Keeley Knie, and other friends of NCCA, attended the Association of Classical Christian Schools “Repairing the Ruins” conference. Over the course of four days, we had the opportunity to hear from Doug Wilson, George Grant, Albert Mohler, and Rosaria Butterfield, amongst many. We learned from teachers and administrators of classical Christian schools from across the country.
While the workshops covered a broad range of topics, the centrality of the conference was cultivating faithful Christian academies that are Christian all the way down, classical by consequence. The theme of this year’s conference was “A Celebration of Athanasius” - a classically educated early father of the church and champion of the faith. Athanasius stood “contra mundum” in the height of the Arian movement. There is much to be gleaned from Athanasius, a fraction of which was used to edify the men and women that attended this conference.
MEET OUR GRAMMAR SCHOOL 1ST & 2ND GRADE TEACHER - Miss Knie
I am Keeley Knie, and I will be teaching 1st and 2nd grade at New City Classical Academy for the 2023-2024 school year. I am getting married on September 30th and will be Mrs. Eaton! I am a very active person. I love being outside, working out, reading, journaling, spending time in community, and drinking lots of coffee!
I recently taught kindergarten in the public school and the Lord graciously provided me an opportunity to bring my gifts to a school where I can freely pray and disciple my students. I am passionate about teaching my students where their hope comes from and to stir their affections for the wonder and beauty of the Lord. I am beyond excited and grateful to be entrusted with such a task!
MEET OUR GRAMMAR SCHOOL 3rd - 5th GRADE TEACHER - Mrs. Arguello
I am Emily Arguello and I will be teaching 3rd-5th grade at New City Classical Academy. My husband Alex and I have six children, Taydem (18), Creighton (15), Micah (12), Keller (9), Graham (7), and Quinn (4). Taydem will be a freshman in college, Quinn is still at home, and the other four children will be attending NCCA.
I have been growing in my love and knowledge of classical Christian education for over ten years. I am excited to integrate my love of literature and the common arts into my grammar classroom. In my classroom all subjects will be taught as parts of an integrated whole with the Scriptures at the center. Every student will be encouraged to begin and develop his relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ. Every student will be encouraged to develop a love for learning and live up to his academic potential. We are going to work really hard and have a lot of fun!
“Why should we be distressed that the world is full of dragons when we’re bringing up a race of dragon-slayers?”
- Doug Wilson
A Word About Curriculum:
Christians are re-readers. We were made for great stories. Stories take us on grand adventures. One of the books we will read aloud in the 3rd-5th classroom is “The Indian in the Cupboard” by Lynne Reid Banks. We encourage you to read this book aloud with your child this summer to awaken him to the virtue of responsibility - God is pleased when we act responsibly to His glory. The first read through could lead to great dinner conversations about friendship, history, and seeing circumstances through another person’s perspective. This will introduce our children to the characters and bring the story to life to create a rich comprehension in the classroom as we take a deeper dive into the story together. While this novel will be read specifically in the 3rd-5th grade classroom, we think this is a story for all ages! Enjoy together as a family!
